Hazzan Jonathan Schultz, Cantor at Congregation B'nai Israel in St Petersburg, FL. Cantor Schultz came to CBI in October 2011. He grew up in Bethesda, Maryland and attended the University of Rochester, where he earned a degree in physics with a minor in music. Prior to entering the Cantorate, he worked as an engineer, served several High Holy Day pulpits, and trained for a career in opera. He has sung with several opera and operetta companies in the Washington, DC area, including lead roles in H.M.S. Pinafore and Eugene Onegin. He has also sung with contemporary a cappella groups, and has arranged many songs for those groups.

As a JTS student, he served High Holy Day pulpits at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, at Congregation Beth Yeshurun in Houston, where he served as Ba’al Shacharit for Hazzan David Propis, and at The Manetto Hill Jewish Center in Plainview, NY. In the summer of 2008, he taught nusah and cantillation at the Conservative Yeshiva in Jerusalem. In the summer of 2009, he did Clinical Pastoral Education at JTS. During his studies at JTS, he was a Cantorial Intern at Park Avenue Synagogue in New York City, and the part-time cantor of Commack Jewish Center in Commack, New York.

He is passionate about conducting choirs and composing new music. His first composition, “Shalom Rav,” has been published in Transcontinental Music’s Shabbat Anthology Volume VI, released in December 2011. He has also been a conducting intern at St. Petersburg College.

All access to the event will cease for new attendees 10 minutes after the start of the actual service. IF you lose connection, we will try and let you back in, but we cannot guarantee that you will be able to return.

The ZOOM waiting room will be used as a “penalty box” for anyone who interrupts the speaker at any time. We will be forwarding usernames and information to ZOOM in cases of disruption.

MERCAZ-Canada member and Times of Israel writer David Roytenberg has been facilitating a group at Kehillat Beth Israel in Ottawa.

Bassem Eid has a long record of documenting human rights violations against Palestinians committed by the Palestinian Authority and Hamas. He is frequently consulted on Israel affairs as a television commentator. Bassem Eid will speak to us about the recent unrest between Jews and Arabs in Israel's cities as well as prospects for change under the new Israeli government.

The Masorti/Conservative Movement has a special relationship with our brothers and sisters in Uganda, members of the Abayudaya, a Jewish community in and around Mbale, Uganda.

They are an incredible group of people who have persevered through incredible hardships and challenges over the years.

They have encountered discrimination in Uganda during the regime of Idi Amin, and have been turned away at Ben Gurion Airport, preventing young men from attending the Conservative Yeshiva in Jerusalem, doubly discriminated for being African and Conservative.

The FJMC, Cantors Assembly Rabbinic Assembly, USCJ and others have supported the community through the years with missions, torahs, tefillin and other items. It has been a two way street; the Abayudaya people, their music and outlook has enriched all of those who they have come in contact with. In 2017, the FJMC made the Abayudaya their newest region, the first on the African continent.
Life in Uganda is not easy, and with COVID, it became much harder. Our dear friend, Aaron Kintu Moses Z-L, the community's lay leader, passed away from COVID in September 2020. Aaron had been to two FJMC Conventions and met many of those who attend our Friday events.

Today, Uganda is in very strict lockdown. People are unable to work or leave their homes and the lockdown is very severely enforced.

There is a very strong risk of starvation without outside help to purchase food, medicine and supplies. They cannot do it themselves, they need our help.

This lockdown contains real penalties for lockdown violations and because of the new variants and lack of Vaccines, the restrictions are severe.
