Ladies and Gentlemen,

We hope that you and your family are well and weathering these days as smoothly as possible. We know that this is an incredibly challenging time for most. We are all feeling enormous uncertainty, and for some, this has been incredibly difficult. We are writing about several updates regarding the Yellow Candle program.

Holocaust Remembrance for Kristallnacht - Light Your Yom HaShoah Yellow Candle on Monday, November 9th

November 9th is the 82nd anniversary of Kristallnacht, also known as the Night of the Broken Glass. Historians regard Kristallnacht's events as being the first step in the run-up to the horrors of the Holocaust. We ask our members to light a Yom HaShoah memorial candle or a Yahrzeit candle in remembrance of all of the victims and their families of Kristallnacht. Let us learn from history and stand up against hatred.

With COVID-19 infections spreading at a fast pace, packing and distributing Yellow Candles
should not wait until mid-March

We suggest that you make plans to pack and distribute candles for those who have an existing inventory of candles stored at your synagogue basement or a member's house.

Europe has been grappling with the second wave of Covid-19 infections that have forced countries like France, Spain, Germany, Italy, and Poland to re-impose lockdowns and other restrictions aimed at curbing the spread of the disease. In the United States, the fall surge in COVID-19 infections added nearly half a million cases.

Suppose cases of the Coronavirus continue to rise in North America. In that case, Synagogues in many states and Canadian territories may be ordered to shut down again or continue their closure according to governmental restrictions to contain the surge of new cases. We are asking our clubs that did not distribute candles earlier in 2020, to make an effort to distribute them, if possible, before mid-December.

Please review the Pandemic Response plan of your Synagogue, which will guide you through the difficult decisions for when you can enter the Synagogue building. The goal is to contain the spread of infection and protect the community's health.

Clubs should follow public health guidance and mandates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and local health departments. If your state is in the Phase 2 stage and permits significantly limited gatherings with social distancing and personal protection measures, please review the specific actions and protocols that your Synagogue has implemented and the relevant public health information which triggers those actions.

If possible, plan a packing party before Thanksgiving. You should spread your "packing team" in your shul's social hall or another appropriate location at least six feet apart and wear masks. Remember social distancing. If packing cannot be performed on-site, rescue your Yellow Candles from your building when appropriate and store them in a member's garage. Packing can be finished by a group, weather permitting, outdoors. Once packed, you may distribute the candles by the USPS, Bulk Mail, or by hand home delivery any time before March.

Please heed the advice given above, to order and distribute them, if possible, before

We light one candle to preserve the memory of our six million lost brothers and sisters who died for the sanctification of God’s name, in the horrors of the Holocaust. We light the candle to say never again. May their memory be for a blessing, and by lighting a Yellow Candle, may we never forget.
