The role of community

What does it mean to be a community?

By Bruce Tomar

A community is a group of people connected by shared interests, identity, location or purpose, fostering social ties, mutual support and a sense of belonging, often leading to collective action and shared understanding.

In Judaism, community is the primary organizing structure of Jewish life.

For FJMC, community is the strength that has sustained and brought growth throughout our history. Our set of shared values, no matter where we are, is a palpable energy.

Why community? Well, we were formerly the Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs. We are now much more than that. Of course, we will always have clubs or brotherhoods. But, as FJMC expands globally, our definition of community must also expand

Our vision is that one day we will be a worldwide community of brothers. As evidenced at our recent Leadership Development Institute, we are young men, veterans and brothers from the United States, Canada and now the United Kingdom, with more to come. It was a beautiful look into how community should be.

Yours in brotherhood and community,

Bruce Tomar
