A Father’s Day Tribute

“תודה לאבא – Thank You, Dad”

By Jason Hecht

Father’s Day invites us to pause and honor the men whose strength, guidance and quiet acts of love shape our lives. In Israeli music, few songs capture that bond as beautifully as “תודה לאבא (Toda La’Aba) – Thank You, Dad,” performed by Ron Shoval.

The video shows a father and son walking together through the years—sometimes side by side, sometimes with the father just a step behind, offering support without needing to be asked. It’s a simple story, but a deeply Jewish one: the passing of values from one generation to the next, the way a father teaches not only with words but with presence.

The lyrics speak to something universal:

  • The father who works quietly behind the scenes
  • The father who gives without asking for recognition
  • The father who shows love through action, responsibility and example

In the video, we see snapshots of life—childhood moments, teenage challenges and the pride of adulthood. Each scene reflects a truth many of us know well: fathers don’t always say “I love you” out loud, but they say it in a thousand other ways. In the way they show up. In the way they protect. In the way they believe in us even before we believe in ourselves.

For our FJMC community, this message resonates deeply. We are fathers, grandfathers, mentors, uncles and role models. We are the ones who pass down traditions, who teach our children how to lead a blessing, how to dance at a simcha, how to show kindness, how to be mensches in a complicated world.

As we celebrate Father’s Day, “Toda La’Aba” reminds us that fatherhood is not just a role—it is a legacy.

  • A legacy of love.
  • A legacy of responsibility.
  • A legacy of walking beside the next generation, step by step.

May this song inspire us to honor the fathers in our lives, to remember those no longer with us and to celebrate the men who helped shape who we are today.

To all the fathers and father-figures in our FJMC family: Todah. Thank you.

On this Father’s Day, we lovingly remember Robert H. Hecht—a devoted father, respected physician and a man whose compassion and strength left a lasting imprint on everyone who knew him. In both his professional life and his role as a father, Robert embodied integrity, kindness and a deep commitment to caring for others. His presence brought comfort, his guidance brought clarity and his example continues to inspire.

Beyond his family and medical career, Robert also made a meaningful impact through his involvement with FJMC. As a proud member, he played a key role in helping to form a Men’s Club in Rancho Palos Verdes, creating a space for connection, leadership and Jewish community life that continues to benefit others today. Though he is no longer with us, his legacy lives on in the values he instilled, the community he helped build and the love he gave so freely. On this day, we honor his memory with gratitude and pride—he is deeply missed and forever remembered.
