Celebrating the LGBTQ+ Jewish community

FJMC International is pleased to join organizing partners USY and Tzedek Center as a co-sponsor of a new initiative to highlight the contributions of LGBTQ+ Jews to the Conservative/Masorti Movement.

Dubbed “Shabbat Across the Movement: Hineinu – Here Now & Always,” the new program is designed to celebrate “a light that has always been here: the Torah, leadership, creativity and joy” that LGBTQ+ Jews bring, according to the program’s website.

Inspired by the Ner Tamid – the eternal light described in Parshat Tetzaveh – this special Shabbat will be held Feb. 19-20, 2027, although communities can also use the materials for a different Shabbat of their choice.

“Twenty years after watershed teshuvot marked a profound shift in LGBTQ+ life in our Movement, we come together to honor the contributions of our LGBTQ+ community, acknowledge that the journey toward full belonging has not always been easy or complete, and look towards a Jewish future of belonging that we can continue building together,” the website says.

To participate, communities can go to the program’s website and sign up to receive a plug-and-play toolkit, including liturgy, readings, Divrei Torah, educational resources and program ideas. They can then choose how to celebrate, by incorporating one or more resources into their Shabbat in February or for their own Pride Shabbat or another Shabbat throughout the year.

All of the “evergreen” materials will be available by the end of December.

USY – United Synagogue Youth – will host two virtual Havdalot for teens in grades 9 through 12 on Motzei Shabbat of Feb. 20.

Besides FJMC, other co-sponsors include the Rabbinical Assembly, United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism, Jewish Educators Assembly, Women’s League for Conservative Judaism, Cantors Assembly and NAASE.
