Each Sustainability Development Goal (SDG) approved by the UN General Assembly in 2015 is aimed at promoting global prosperity, while protecting the planet and providing everyone a reasonable quality of life without distinction to race, national origin, gender or age. SDGs particularly emphasize inequalities found around the world with marginalized groups such as women, youth, people with disabilities and indigenous populations.
Data is submitted by all nations that demonstrates their degree of success in each of the SDGs:
In November, the World Summit for Social Development will aim to foster inclusive social development and address challenges to achieve well-being for all the world’s citizens. The summit is designed to motivate further efforts to reach SDG target data points emphasizing shared responsibility and environmental betterment on a global scale.
FJMC INTERNATIONAL OFFERS A CLEAR BRIDGE BETWEEN JEWISH VALUES AND THE UN’s SDGs
Mutual responsibility (Arvut hadadit) and sustainability are deeply connected through a shared responsibility of collective well-being and long-term thinking. There are many obligations including providing financial assistance to those in need, offering emotional support during challenging times, and actively use of prayers and blessings in the interest of others.
Through FJMC International we believe in Olam Chesed Yibenah – I will build the world with kindness. What FJMC International members can do at their own local club or individual levels:
For instance, food banks help those in need of nourishment. Sustainability practices at home and your place of employment can contribute to cleaner air and water. Working together to be a positive influence on the planet includes FJMC International engagement that fosters meaningful relationships, personal growth, and affirmation of the Jewish values we were all raised to hold dear and practice.
We must not remain indifferent (tukhal l’hitalein). Our Jewish approach to life requires our awareness of injustice and a desire to act. Hillel says “do not separate yourself from the community.” We are obligated to take responsibility.
The UN’s SDGs aim to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure peace, and prosperity for all. Together we can make a difference!
