A Statement from FJMC: Bondi Beach Hanukkah Attack
FJMC International mourns the devastating loss of life following the terrorist attack at Bondi Beach in Australia during a Hanukkah gathering. We condemn this act of terror and violence in the strongest possible terms. Reports indicate that at least eleven people were murdered, including Rabbi Eli Schlanger, the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. We grieve for every life taken, and we hold their families, loved ones, and the entire Bondi Jewish community in our hearts.
We extend our deepest condolences to those who are suffering unimaginable loss and trauma. May the mourners be comforted among all who grieve, and may those who are injured experience healing of body and spirit. We pray for strength for the first responders, caregivers, and communal leaders who are carrying the weight of this tragedy.
Jewish tradition teaches that violence against innocents is an affront to the Divine image present in every human being. Terrorism seeks not only to take lives, but to instill fear, silence communities, and extinguish hope. We join the call for justice and accountability, and we stand with our partners and allies in rejecting hatred in all its forms.
That this attack occurred during Hanukkah deepens the pain—and sharpens our resolve. Hanukkah is the story of light defying darkness, of a small flame refusing to be snuffed out by cruelty and oppression. Even when hatred tries to overwhelm, we are commanded to kindle light, to place it where it can be seen, and to insist on life, dignity, and moral courage. The menorah reminds us that we do not retreat from the public square in fear; we illuminate it with purpose.
In memory of those who were killed, including Rabbi Schlanger, may their lives be a blessing. May their light continue to shine through acts of compassion, solidarity, and justice. And may we, as a global Jewish community and as human beings, answer this darkness by increasing light—together.
With strength, humility, and hope,
