Sharing Holiday Traditions within an Interfaith Family
Sharing Holiday Traditions within an Interfaith Family by Heather Budman and Chris Golen
For our household, it means creating a unique, warm blend where both of our heritages have a physical and emotional home. We might have a Christmas tree next to a Menorah and mix traditional foods, letting our daughter experience the beauty of both faiths side by side.
We let the mix of the holidays in general create a unique atmosphere where the lighting of the tree and the Menorah make memories for our daughter. Exposing her to the traditions of latkes and Christmas cookies, Santa Claus and singing the Hanukkah blessing, allows her to enjoy the holidays surrounded by family and friends.
We bring joy to our home through the traditions we keep for both holidays. We do a cookie exchange and decorating with our friends and we make a traditional Hanukah dinner. We make sure that our daughter understands that these holidays mean family, traditions and being together.
