On October 7, Dr. Codish presided over the largest mass casualty hospital response in the world. Soroka Medical Center, the only major hospital in Israel’s south, stands at the forefront of the battle to save the lives of the wounded as Israel’s Medical Iron Dome.

On the Frontline of Treating Israel’s Wounded
Soroka Medical Center, the only major medical center in Israel’s south, stands at the forefront of the battle to save the lives of Israel’s wounded. Soroka’s Francis and Nathan Kirsh Trauma Center and Emergency Department have tirelessly treated over 1,400 wounded patients, with a significant number in critical condition.

Dr. Sapir Bitton
Dr. Biton’s was in her first solo shift as a psychiatrist in the ER of Soroka Hospital. For 38 hours she treated the countless number of wounded. At the same time, she was worrying about her family besieged in Kibbutz Erez just over the border with Gaza.

Dr. Shlomi Codish
Dr. Shlomi Codish is the Director General of Soroka Medical Center. His impressive educational background includes Ben Gurion University Medical School, residency in Internal Medicine at Soroka Medical Center, and a postdoctoral fellowship in Medical Informatics at Yale University. His outstanding leadership skills have led him to pivotal roles in the Israeli healthcare system, including Medical Director of the Southern Region of Clalit Health Services. Dr. Codish is a strong advocate for implementing technology, innovation and collaboration to drive medical advances, helping Soroka contribute deeply to global health . Under his leadership, key performance metrics, as reported by the Israeli Ministry of Health, such as Infection control, elevated Soroka to its status as a top hospital in Israel.

Dr. Codish’s leadership during these challenging times has been extraordinary. On October 7 he acquired a new credential – having presided over the largest mass casualty hospital response in the world. 22 miles from Gaza and the only major medical center for the Negev, Soroka has cared for the most seriously wounded throughout the war.
